Black PMK-4 Gas Mask
This page has been made to show
how I have repainted a DAM Green gas mask from the 78078s Sniper
figure set that I obtained loose. My reason for re-painting
this mask as an experiment, is that I want to make a gas mask,
a pipe and filter that is worn on the back of my DAM 78058 MVD
SOBR Lynx figure.
The first pictures at the base of the page,
show what I am trying to replicate, but the biggest problem I
had. Was to find a 1/6 scale PMK-4 gas mask, and it was not
until DAM released their new mask. That I could even think of
making what I wanted.
In Picture 1.
above I have on the left
a 1/6 scale Green PMK-4 gas mask as it came with the DAM
sniper figure. Next to it, is another gas mask, but after I
have given it the re-paint with some Black acrylic paint.
Painting Method
I am very pleased with the way that it has
turned out. Because as I said before this was a very risky
experiment by me, as I did not know how the acrylic paint
would react to the actual material the model mask is made
from. I firstly used the Humbrol Maskol as shown in Picture
2. to
protect the green lens from the Black acrylic paint.
Note: When painting the Maskol, be careful as it
dries, because I found as I tried to paint more of it on the
lens. It started to gently lift the already dried Maskol off
the lens, that is why it has a lumpy appearance on the mask on
the right in Picture 3.
Once it had dried as a rubber coating, as shown
in Picture 3.
I then started to use the Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black acrylic
paint on the mask to re-colour it. Once that was all dry, I
gave the mask a dust over with some Tamiya Soot weathering
powder, to add a flat look to the mask, and I finally then
carefully peeled the Maskol off the lens.
Black PMK-4 Gas Mask And Filter
This is what I wanted the gas mask for, as I
wanted to construct on my DAM SOBR Lynx figure, a hose and
single filter to be worn the back of it, as shown in the
reference pictures below. I originally saw this done by a
fellow modeller from Monkon
Studio on the BBICN forum, and I am very
grateful for all of the help that they supplied to me about
their figure.

It was explained to me about how
the modeller had used the hoses from the rebreather unit, from
the DAM Marine Recon Force Diver figure as shown in Picture
4. So I
have had to buy this unit loose, and luckily I was also able
to use the hoses, as well as some of the couplings for it. To
make the gas mask assembly as shown above.
Picture 5.
is the hose and the connection for it to the gas mask, which I
have had to adapt and scratch build into the angled connector.
By also using plastic tubing, cut to a 90 degree angle, sand
flat and then add the flat piece on top which was then sanded
to shape and painted.
Picture 6.
shows the end of the hose, that connects to the filter. As
well as the filter inside the cloth holder that I have made,
onto which I have sewn 2 x top buckles as well as the rear
straps to fit to the figure.
White PMK-4 Gas Mask
This mask is based on
the last two reference pictures below, it has been repainted in a similar way to
the first mask above in Picture
6. But for this one it is more of an experiment to me.
As I
cannot be certain if the White acrylic would completely cover the Green colour,
without losing any detail. I have found that for
this mask colour, it would be better if it is airbrushed onto the mask, as I did
have to re-paint parts of the mask again by paintbrush.
Even after I added some
Artists Acrylic Flow Improver to the paint, to try to get an even paint
coverage. When this was almost dry, I gave the mask a wash over with a wet
paintbrush to smooth out any brush strokes. And after leaving everything to dry
for several hours, I then gave it a brush over with some Tamiya Snow
Weathering Powder
to again add a flat look to the mask.

The Green mask filter cover
was also re-painted with the White acrylic paint, because of the colour of the
material. I have had to re-paint it twice again, to make sure that the colour
was now White.
As the mask is
supposed to be used by winter or snow troops, I have had to put a mirror film onto the
extra glass lens that comes with the gas mask. This was done as yet another
experiment by me, where I bought a small section of a mirror on a roll. Which is
a sticky backed type of mirror, so I cut a small section out, stuck it on the
extra glass lens. And then I very carefully trimmed it to shape with a sharp
model knife.
And by looking at this
page, where there are comparisons between gas masks -
Comparisons. I have found out that I have accidentally made two gas masks
out of one. As shown above in the normal white mask in Picture

and in Picture
8.
by the addition of the mirrored outsert over the green gas mask visor.
